Stainless Steel Water Wall at Hotel Reception

Behind the reception desk of a boutique hotel, this stainless steel water wall adds calm and motion to the entrance experience. A thin, even film of water runs down a flowing polished panel, catching the ambient light.

The panel is fabricated in 316 stainless with a gently rippled surface that textures the water film without turbulence. A concealed recirculating system sits below the reception joinery, and the whole piece was engineered to keep the sound soft — a watermark of luxury rather than a noisy feature.

The brief

The client is a boutique hotel in Lisbon, Portugal, reworking its reception so arriving guests meet a calm, tactile moment before the check-in desk.

The brief asked for movement and sound behind reception that stays quiet enough for normal conversation at the counter, within a 3 m W × 2.4 m H recess. Pipework had to hide below the counter and remain serviceable. Ten weeks were allowed.

Design approach

The design is a single mirrored panel with a gently rippled face, so the water film follows the surface rather than falling as a sheet, breaking reflections into a soft image of the lobby.

At 3 m W × 2.4 m H it fills the recess without competing with the joinery. Ripple depth was tuned in two passes: enough to texture the water, not enough to create turbulence.

Material & engineering

316 stainless was specified for an indoor environment of constant humidity and cleaning agents, where the wall will be wiped and sprayed regularly and a lesser steel would slowly mark.

The panel is formed and welded with a continuous return so no edge is exposed. Water runs from a concealed header weir to a sump below the joinery, reachable from the front, on an adjustable frame for precise levelling.

Fabrication & finish

The rippled face was formed, welded and dressed in the workshop, then polished to a mirror across the whole panel. Because ripples break light in every direction, polishing was checked from multiple angles.

The assembly was wet-tested to tune header flow until the film was even edge to edge and the sound sat where the hotel wanted it. Piping and sump were pressure-tested before dispatch.

Installation

The panel arrived pre-assembled and was fixed to a prepared frame in the recess, levelled against the joinery line. Final plumbing was connected to the sump below the counter and surfaces made good.

Outcome & value

Reception now has a quiet, moving focal point that guests notice on arrival without dominating conversation at the desk. Mirror and water together reflect the lobby, so the wall feels integrated rather than applied.

Running cost is low: water recirculates through a small pump and routine work is a filter clean and periodic descaling. In 316 stainless the finish should stay bright through the hotel’s cleaning regime.
