Bronze Horse Sculpture at a Hotel Entrance

For a hotel entrance that wanted warmth and a sense of arrival, we cast a bronze horse in a dynamic, lifting pose on a low stone plinth. The deep brown-black patina catches the evening uplights and gives the piece a timeless, solid gravitas.

Bronze was the right call here — the client wanted a classic, human welcome rather than a mirror-polished modern statement. The casting and patina were completed in our shop, and the sculpture is anchored to a reinforced plinth for a busy entrance where people gather for photos.

The brief

The client is a heritage hotel in Florence, Italy, restoring an entrance courtyard that had lost its original focal point. It asked for a horse in a lifting, half-rearing pose on a low stone plinth.

The courtyard is a busy threshold of taxis, luggage and guests gathering for photographs, so the sculpture had to tolerate constant touching, sit at photo height and read under warm entrance lighting after dark.

Design approach

The pose was developed from movement studies to find a silhouette that reads from both the street and the lobby doors. At 3 m L × 2.2 m H it holds a small vehicle’s space but stays below the window line.

A low plinth was preferred over a pedestal so guests can stand level with the animal for photographs. Two maquette rounds settled the head carriage and the raised foreleg.

Material & engineering

Bronze was the deliberate choice for a heritage entrance: warmth and permanence that polished steel cannot deliver here, fine surface detail from the modelling, and a tone that suits historic stonework.

The casting is hollow, keeping weight near a third of a solid figure. The raised foreleg is a cantilever with an internal armature, and the anchors tie into the reinforced plinth rather than the paving.

Fabrication & finish

The figure was modelled, moulded and cast in sections, then welded and chased until the joints disappeared into the surface. Chasing decides whether a bronze looks cast or assembled, and took most of the workshop hours.

The dark brown-black patina was layered and lifted back on the shoulders, neck and flank so the form still reads in low evening light. A protective wax sealed the finish before crating.

Installation

The horse travelled in a single crate and was craned over the courtyard wall onto the prepared plinth in one lift. Cast-in studs were set into the stone, grouted, and the base dressed to match the paving.

Outcome & value

The courtyard has regained its arrival moment, and the horse is now the hotel’s most photographed spot — guests queue for the angle the pose was designed to give them.

Maintenance is a seasonal dust-down and re-wax, with no moving or electrical parts. For the hotel it is a permanent, low-running-cost identifier at its front door.
