Mirror-Polished Abstract Sculpture for a Hotel Lobby

The client wanted their hotel lobby to make the first impression count — a single sculptural element that reads as luxury without a word of signage. We designed an abstract flowing form in 316 stainless steel, mirror-polished to reflect the marble floor and warm lighting.

The curves are engineered with a seamless TIG-welded skin and a concealed base, so the piece floats visually while the structure below is entirely hidden. It serves as both sculpture and architectural focus — visible the moment a guest enters.

The brief

A luxury hotel group in Singapore wanted the lobby to make its first impression without signage. The brief was a single sculptural element that would read as the arrival marker from the entrance doors and suit the marble floor and warm interior lighting.

It also had to stay immaculate under a cleaning regime that uses commercial products daily. The lobby is interior but sits in a tropical, coastal city, so humidity and airborne salt remain part of the environment. The programme ran 14 weeks, delivered in 2025.

Design approach

The form is an abstract flowing volume that turns on itself, so there is no front or back and the piece works from the entrance, the reception desk and the lift lobby. At 4 m H × 2.8 m W it holds the double-height space without crowding circulation.

Material & engineering

316 stainless steel was specified because interior cleaning products and the city’s coastal humidity both attack a polished surface over time; the marine-grade alloy gives the pitting resistance that keeps the mirror stable with routine care. The skin is TIG-welded into a continuous surface.

The volume is a welded shell over a concealed base, which is what makes it float visually while the structure stays hidden. The base plate spreads the load across the floor build-up rather than concentrating it.

Fabrication & finish

The shell was formed in panels, welded and hand-finished through the polishing grades to a full mirror, with the interior reinforced against handling and transport. The finished surface was inspected under directional light before crating, since a lobby mirror reveals any defect.

Installation

The sculpture shipped crated as a single protected unit and was brought in through the service entrance, set on a levelled base, anchored and touched up in position. Installation ran overnight so the lobby stayed open.

Outcome & value

The piece now does the work of a lobby sign: guests know where they are the moment the doors open, and it appears in every arrival photograph the property publishes. With no coating to renew, the hotel keeps it with its existing cleaning cycle.
