Shopping Mall Atrium Suspended Sculpture

Shopping centre developer · Singapore · 316 Stainless

A suspended sculpture in the central atrium of a super-regional shopping mall, where the piece hangs above the main circulation spine and is visible from three retail levels. The mall operates 10:00–22:00 daily; the sculpture must be striking in daylight, readable under ambient mall lighting, and maintainable without closing the atrium.

The brief

A 12 m tall suspended form that reads as a single luminous volume from the ground floor, resolves into layered bands from the mezzanine, and provides a recognisable landmark for the mall’s app-based wayfinding. Weight limit: 3,500 kg including rigging. No part may project into the fire-egress corridors that ring the atrium.

Design approach

A stack of 15 toroidal bands, each rotated 12° from the one below, creating a continuous helix that appears to rise through the atrium. The bands are open at the centre, so sightlines through the atrium are preserved. A central spine carries the suspension loads; the bands are bolted to the spine with adjustable clevises so the rotation can be trimmed on site.

Material & engineering

316 stainless for the tropical humidity and the occasional chlorinated overspray from the adjacent water feature. Each band is a 6 mm rolled plate with a 3 mm edge return, laser-cut to the toroid profile and seam-welded. The spine is a 150 mm solid stainless bar, carrying a total suspended load of 2,800 kg. Suspension is four 16 mm 316 stainless rods to roof-mounted anchor plates, with a 5:1 safety factor on the ultimate tensile strength.

Fabrication & finish

The bands are mirror-polished on the outer face and satin on the inner face, so the outer surface reflects the atrium glazing and the inner surface absorbs light, giving the helix a sense of depth. All welds are full-penetration, ground flush and electropolished. The suspension rods are stainless steel with swaged terminals and lockable turnbuckles for length adjustment.

Installation

Assembled on the ground floor over a weekend closure, then hoisted as a single assembly using the mall’s permanent roof beams and a 50 t mobile crane positioned in the service yard. Levelled and locked in 4 hours; the mall reopened on schedule Monday morning.

Outcome & value

The sculpture is now the mall’s most-shared Instagram location, and the wayfinding app uses it as the “centre point” reference. Maintenance is a quarterly rope-access clean; the suspension system is designed for 25 years with annual visual inspection only.
