Brushed Stainless Wall Art with Integrated Water Feature for a Hospital Healing Garden
316 Stainless
A hospital healing garden needed a focal wall that would provide visual calm and acoustic masking for patients and visitors. We delivered a 6 m brushed stainless steel relief with an integrated sheet water wall, engineered for silent operation, zero splash on paved paths, and compliance with healthcare infection-control cleaning protocols.
The brief
The hospital’s new healing garden included a 6 m × 2.5 m blank wall facing patient rooms and a meditation lawn. The brief: a sculptural relief that incorporates a water feature, sound level ≤35 dB(A) at 3 m (to not disturb adjacent rooms), all surfaces cleanable with hospital-grade disinfectants, no standing water (legionella risk), and a 12-week programme.
Design approach
The relief occupies the upper 1.5 m of the wall, composed of horizontal brushed facets at varying depths (40–100 mm) to catch light through the day. The lower 1 m is a vertical sheet water wall: a precision weir feeds a laminar film down a mirror-polished panel into a concealed catch basin with a pumped recirculation loop. The water film is tuned to a silent “sheet” mode (no splashing droplets). All surfaces are stainless steel; the basin is accessible behind a hinged panel for quarterly cleaning.
Material & engineering
316L stainless steel throughout (exterior, chlorinated cleaning agents). Relief facets: 3 mm plate, #4 brushed. Water wall panel: 2 mm plate, mirror polished (8K) for a flawless water film. Weir is a machined 316L slot with ±0.1 mm tolerance across 6 m. Pump: variable-speed, 45 l/min/m, with UV sterilization and conductivity monitoring in the loop. The system is on a BACnet interface for facilities management.
Fabrication & finish
Relief facets and water panel were fabricated in parallel. The water panel was electropolished after mirror polishing to remove any micro-crevices. All welds are full-penetration TIG, ground flush, and passivated. The assembly was pressure-tested at 1.5× operating pressure before shipment. Brushed surfaces received a final citric acid passivation dip.
Installation
The wall was installed in a single weekend to minimize disruption. The catch basin was pre-plumbed to the plant room. Water commissioning took two days: flow rate, sheet evenness, and sound level were verified at 32 dB(A) at 3 m. The hinged access panel was tested for tool-less opening by nursing staff.
Outcome & value
Post-occupancy surveys show the garden is the most visited non-clinical space in the hospital. Sound masking reduced perceived noise from the adjacent corridor by 18 %. Infection control approved the cleaning protocol (standard disinfectant wipe, no special procedure). The UV loop has maintained <10 CFU/mL for 18 months.
