This understated water feature does one thing beautifully: a continuous sheet of water spills over the polished lip of a 316 stainless pan into the pool below, adding sound and movement without crowding the deck.
Built in marine-grade 316 for the chlorinated environment, the pan has a machined overflow edge that keeps the water film even and quiet. A concealed recirculating pump sits in a serviceable pit — designed so the resort’s maintenance team can reach everything without draining the pool.
The brief
A boutique resort in the Maldives asked for a water feature on the pool terrace that would add sound and movement without taking deck space or dominating the view. The brief was deliberately small: one clean sheet of water, quiet in operation.
It had to use the pool’s own water and be serviceable by the resort’s own team. The setting is marine-grade in every sense — salt air, chlorinated water, full sun and constant humidity — and the programme ran 9 weeks, delivered in 2024.
Design approach
The design is a single stainless pan with a polished lip, set so water falls in one unbroken sheet from the lip to the pool surface. At 2.4 m × 1.2 m × 0.5 m it is a low, horizontal element, adding movement at seating height without blocking a sightline to the water.
Material & engineering
316 stainless steel was the only sensible specification for a feature sitting beside chlorinated pool water in a marine climate. The molybdenum content resists the pitting that chloride exposure causes on lesser grades, which is why the pan can stay mirror-polished where a coating would fail within a season.
The overflow lip is machined rather than folded, which keeps the sheet of water even and quiet across the full 2.4 m width. The pan is welded and dressed into a single watertight body, with a concealed recirculating pump in a serviceable pit.
Fabrication & finish
The pan was formed, welded and pressure-tested before polishing, with the lip alignment checked against a straight edge over its full length. The unit then ran a full cycle on the test bench to confirm an unbroken film at the design flow rate.
Installation
The pan shipped as a finished unit and was set on a prepared plinth at the pool edge, levelled and connected to the recirculation line, with the pump pit accessible from the terrace. Commissioning covered flow setting and level control.
Outcome & value
The feature gives the deck the sound and movement that make a pool area feel alive, at the cost of a metre of terrace and no view at all. Operationally it is deliberately simple: one pump, one machined lip, one stainless body.
