Brushed Stainless Abstract Sculpture in a City Park

This park sculpture uses interlocking circles and flat planes in brushed stainless steel to create a piece that changes with the light and the season. The brushed finish is deliberately quieter than mirror — it catches soft reflections without glare, suiting a contemplative park setting.

The geometry is engineered for an exposed location: each intersecting plane is braced through a central hub, and the whole sculpture is dynamically stabilised against wind. It lives among lawns and paths, where visitors can walk through and around it.

The brief

A city park authority in Amsterdam, Netherlands, commissioned a sculpture for a lawn area where paths converge, aiming to give a broad open space a point of orientation. The brief called for a calm, abstract piece that could be walked through and around.

It had to suit a contemplative landscape rather than compete with it, in a site fully exposed to Dutch rain, wind and winter frost. The programme ran 12 weeks and the piece was installed in 2024.

Design approach

The form is built from interlocking circles and flat planes, so the piece reads as a series of open frames rather than a solid object. That openness was deliberate: from any path it gives a partial view through the sculpture to the trees beyond. At 3.2 m H × 4 m W it holds the junction of the paths without becoming a barrier.

Material & engineering

304 stainless steel was chosen for an inland, temperate city site, where the exposure is rain and frost rather than salt. The brushed satin finish is the more important decision: it is quieter than mirror by design, catching soft reflections without glare, and it hides the handling marks a polished surface would show immediately in a park.

Each intersecting plane is braced through a central hub, so the geometry carries its loads internally and the joints stay visually clean. The sculpture is dynamically stabilised against wind, and the base sits in the lawn behind a concealed collar.

Fabrication & finish

The rings and planes were formed, welded and dressed, then brushed to a consistent satin grain across the whole piece so the finish reads the same on every face. The assembly was trial-built flat to verify the hub angles before dispatch.

Installation

The sculpture was delivered as one main assembly, craned onto a prepared foundation and levelled, with the base collar and surrounding turf reinstated in the same visit. Final brushing and touch-up followed on site.

Outcome & value

The piece marks the crossing of the paths and gives the lawn a centre without fencing it in — visitors walk through the frames rather than around a plinth. In a public park the brushed finish takes weather and incidental contact without a polishing programme.
