Abstract Stainless Figure Sculpture in a Park

This abstract figure reads as a human silhouette opened into flowing, polished forms. Placed where a path curves through the park, it invites visitors to walk around and see the negative space between the forms.

We used brushed and mirror stainless in combination — the matte areas calm the reflection, the polished parts catch sharp light through the trees. The sculpture is engineered for stability on a planted base and finished to weather gracefully.

The brief

The client is an arts foundation in Copenhagen, Denmark, commissioning a permanent work for a city park where a path curves between mature trees and an open lawn.

It asked for an abstract figure that would invite people to walk around it rather than view it from the front. Eleven weeks were set for fabrication and delivery.

Design approach

The figure is a human silhouette opened into flowing forms, so the negative space between the shapes is as much the subject as the steel. At 2.8 m H it stands just above eye level on the path.

Two rounds of mock-ups tested where the openings should sit so the piece frames the trees along the approach. The final geometry keeps one continuous outline, reading as a single figure from a distance.

Material & engineering

304 stainless was selected for an inland park with no salt exposure: it delivers the corrosion resistance a damp northern European climate requires and keeps budget focused on fabrication and finish.

The figure is built over an internal stainless armature with a base plate anchored below grade into a planted footing. Load paths stay continuous through the junctions, and every edge a visitor might touch is radiused.

Fabrication & finish

The piece was fabricated and finished in the workshop, then dry-assembled to confirm the voids read correctly. Each form was checked against the maquette before the next was joined.

The finish is a deliberate mix: brushed satin on the inward surfaces and mirror polish on the edges and outer forms that catch light through the canopy. The contrast was balanced section by section.

Installation

Delivered assembled, the sculpture was lifted from the service track by a small crane and set onto the prepared footing so the base sits just below the turf line. Fixings were covered and planting reinstated.

Outcome & value

Visitors use the figure as a landmark on the path and as a place to pause, and the foundation reports that it reads differently on sunny and overcast days. That changeability keeps a permanent piece interesting.

Maintenance is periodic cleaning of the brushed faces, a wipe of the polished areas and an annual anchor inspection. In 304 with a drained base, the piece should hold finish and structure for decades.
