Mirror-Polished Stainless Steel Sphere Garden Installation

This garden installation pairs a large mirror-polished stainless steel sphere with a thin, continuously flowing water film over its crown. The water runs evenly over the curved surface and falls into a shallow surrounding basin.
The sphere is 316 stainless, polished to a near-seamless mirror. Because the surface reflects the sky, the trees and the changing light, the same piece looks different at every hour — a deliberate quality for a garden setting that is used from morning to evening.
The water delivery was the engineering challenge: an internal pump feeds a quiet manifold at the top, and the flow is tuned so the film stays even without misting onto the paths. A compact basement pump chamber keeps the surface clean.
The brief
A landscape design practice working in London, UK, wanted a water element for a private garden that would read as sculpture first. The garden is planted and overlooked by the house, so the client asked for something that reflects the trees and sky rather than adding a competing colour.
The site is a temperate, wet climate with winter frost, so the sphere and its water system had to be designed for freeze-thaw as well as summer use. The programme ran 10 weeks, completed in 2025.
Design approach
A single mirror sphere with a continuous water film over its crown was the whole idea: the water does not obscure the reflection, it animates it. At 2.5 m Ø it is large enough to dominate the upper garden and low enough to walk past at eye level.
Material & engineering
316 stainless steel was specified for a permanently wet outdoor installation. Water, chlorination and UK winter conditions together make the molybdenum-bearing grade the sensible choice, and it holds a near-seamless mirror polish far better than 304 under a standing film of water.
Water delivery was the engineering problem: an internal pump feeds a quiet manifold at the crown, with flow tuned so the film stays even and falls into the basin without misting onto the paths. A compact below-ground chamber keeps the equipment out of sight.
Fabrication & finish
The sphere was spun and formed in sections, welded and dressed so the joint is invisible in reflection, then polished through to a mirror. The crown manifold was flow-tested and the pump bench-run before dispatch.
Installation
The sphere shipped as a single finished unit, was craned into the garden and set on a prepared chamber, with water and power connected below ground and the paving reinstated. Commissioning covered flow tuning, level control and a frost-drain procedure.
Outcome & value
The installation gives the garden a focal point with no planting maintenance and no seasonal colour decisions: the same object in every season, a different picture in every hour. Guests asking whether the sphere is liquid is the clearest sign the reflection is doing the work.
