Mirror-Polished Water Feature for a Boutique Hotel Courtyard

The developer of a boutique hotel in the Middle East approached us to make their central courtyard the arrival statement. The brief: a water feature that reads as sculpture by day and becomes the warm heart of the courtyard after dark.

We designed an abstract ribbon form in 316 stainless steel, mirror-polished to a high gloss. Two controlled water sheets fall from engineered overflow edges into a shallow black reflecting pool, sized so the hotel lobby glass wall and palms are mirrored across the curved steel.

Every overflow edge was machined to a tolerance that keeps the water film even — no drips, no wind spray on walkways. The whole assembly sits on a concealed stainless substructure with a closed-loop pump and filtration, designed for continuous hotel operation.

The brief

The client is a boutique hotel developer in Dubai, UAE. The courtyard is the first space guests cross after check-in, so the brief asked for a water element that reads as sculpture by day and as the lit heart of the hotel after dark.

The constraints were operational: continuous running through desert summer heat, no wind-carried spray on walkways, and a surface a lean maintenance team could hold to standard. The programme ran 16 weeks, delivered in 2025.

Design approach

The first scheme was a straight blade; the client wanted a form that would still hold the courtyard from the balconies, so we folded the ribbon and turned its widest face towards the lobby. At 6 m H × 9 m W × 4 m D it spans the courtyard diagonally without closing it.

Material & engineering

316 stainless steel was specified because the site sits close to the Gulf and the pool circuit runs with a chlorine residual. The molybdenum content gives the pitting resistance the location needs, and the grade decision came before the finish decision.

The ribbon is a welded shell over an internal stainless spine, designed for courtyard wind loading with downwash from the balconies. Overflow edges are machined rather than rolled, so the film leaves the lip at an even thickness.

Fabrication & finish

The shell was built in segments, TIG-welded and dressed so no seam crosses a reflection line, then hand-finished to a full mirror. Every overflow edge was flow-tested in the workshop before packing.

Installation

The unit shipped in sections, was craned in through a service opening and re-assembled on site, set on cast-in anchors so the perimeter reads flush with the paving. Commissioning covered pump balancing, level control and lighting.

Outcome & value

The courtyard is now the property’s most photographed space, and it carries no signage at all. It performs three jobs at once — artwork, cooling from moving water, and a night-time lighting feature that lifts the courtyard without a lighting scheme of its own.
