316 Stainless Sculpture for a Coastal Promenade

On a coastal promenade where salt spray is constant, we built this sculpture in 316 marine-grade stainless — the only responsible choice for a mirror finish that must stay bright by the sea.
The flowing polished curves reflect the ocean and sky, turning the sculpture into a living viewfinder of the seafront. Surfaces are sealed against micro-pitting, and the structure is anchored to a reinforced base that handles the exposed conditions and foot traffic.
The brief
The client is a seafront development in Nice, France, delivering a promenade upgrade where the sea wall, cycle route and pedestrian frontage meet. It wanted a sculpture to hold the water edge and mark the route.
Salt spray is constant, the site takes full onshore wind and direct sun, and footfall is heavy in season, so the piece had to be safe publicly and workable within the seasonal calendar. Thirteen weeks were allowed.
Design approach
The form is a set of flowing curves that opens towards the sea, so the polished surfaces catch water and sky and the sculpture works as a viewfinder along the promenade.
At 3 m H × 5 m W it reads from the road without blocking the sightline between beach and town. Two model rounds removed pockets where salt and debris could collect.
Material & engineering
316 marine-grade stainless was the only responsible specification here. Its molybdenum content resists chloride pitting — the failure mode that turns a mirror finish on a coast grey and speckled within a couple of seasons.
Formed and welded plate sits over an internal stainless frame, analysed for exposed wind pressure. Drainage paths in the lower folds sheet spray and rainwater away, and every polished face was sealed after finishing.
Fabrication & finish
Panels were formed, welded and dressed in the workshop, then the assembly was trial-erected so seams could be corrected before polishing. The mirror was built through progressive grits with inspection between stages.
Sealing came last: a thin colourless treatment on the polished faces to limit micro-pitting in the spray zone. Fixings and base use the same system, so no bare steel is exposed to marine air.
Installation
The sculpture shipped in two sections and was craned onto a reinforced base cast into the promenade works. Sections were bolted, joints dressed on site, and the base surround completed to match the new paving.
Outcome & value
The piece gives the promenade a meeting point and a marker legible from both the sea and the town. Its curves collect light and water view, so the sculpture changes with the weather rather than looking static.
Maintenance is a freshwater rinse through the season, particularly after storm spray, plus an inspection of the sealed surfaces. With 316 throughout, the finish should hold far longer than a standard grade on this exposure.
