Coastal Promenade Wildlife Sculpture

Seafront regeneration authority · Nice, France · 316 Stainless

A seabird piece on a promenade that takes salt spray, winter storms and continuous public contact. The brief asked for something that would age into its setting rather than need rescuing from it.

The brief

Mark a regenerated stretch of seafront with a piece that reads at walking pace and tolerates being touched, sat on and photographed from every angle. Salt exposure here is constant, not seasonal.

Design approach

A standing bird at roughly twice life size, built from plate with the plumage resolved as overlapping feather plates rather than surface texture — a solution that survives salt because there are no fine details to fill with chloride deposits.

Material & engineering

316 stainless throughout, with molybdenum content specified for a genuinely marine chloride environment rather than an inland site a kilometre from the coast. Legs are 12 mm plate sections sized as structural members: the wind case on a 2.1 m piece on an exposed promenade governs the leg section, not the visual proportion.

Anchorage is a cast-in stainless cage into the promenade slab, isolated from the surrounding reinforcement to avoid a galvanic path into the structure.

Fabrication & finish

Body panels brushed, feather plates bead-blasted — the contrast gives the form definition without any applied colour, and the bead-blasted surfaces are the most forgiving finish available for a piece within arm’s reach of the public.

Installation

Two sections, bolted at a seam hidden along the breast line, landed and grouted in one day with the promenade reopened to pedestrians the same evening.

Outcome & value

The authority specified a bead-blasted finish over the mirror polish originally proposed, accepting a softer look in exchange for a maintenance interval measured in months rather than weeks on a salt-exposed site.
