Mirror Stainless Sphere Plaza Installation

At the heart of a modern plaza, this large mirror-polished stainless sphere acts as both sculpture and social anchor, ringed by curved seating that wraps around its base. The reflection turns the sky, towers and passers-by into the art.

The sphere is 316 stainless with a seamless polished surface, and the surrounding seat is engineered to be robust enough for daily public use. At night it is lit from below, floating against the dark of the square.

The brief

The client is a city development in Austin, USA, delivering a new plaza where the street grid meets a ground-floor retail frontage.

The brief asked for a centrepiece that doubles as informal seating — a piece people use, not just look at. The plaza is inland and hot with intense sun and occasional hail, and takes daily unsupervised public use. Thirteen weeks were allowed.

Design approach

The design pairs a 2.2 m Ø mirror sphere with a curved seating ring wrapping its base, so artwork and furniture are one object. The sphere reflects sky, towers and the people crossing the square.

Two rounds adjusted the ring so the seating depth and back height work for a short sit as well as a long one, with the sphere set just inside the ring so it reads as resting on the seat.

Material & engineering

316 stainless was specified for a hot, active urban environment: the grade resists chlorides and pollution that build on street furniture, and a mirror polish sheds dust and water instead of holding them.

The sphere is spun in hemispheres welded and dressed to a seamless surface, with load carried to a hidden base. The ring frame is engineered for public loading and plaza drainage falls, with underlighting integrated below.

Fabrication & finish

The sphere was spun, matched and welded, then ground and polished until the seam could not be found. On a large mirror sphere that weld line is the whole test, so it was checked repeatedly under raking light.

The ring was trial-assembled with the sphere to confirm fit and seat heights, and the lighting commissioned in the workshop before the unit was split for shipping.

Installation

Delivered as a set, the piece was craned onto the prepared plaza slab with the ring anchored to cast-in fixings and the sphere secured to its base. Underlighting connections were made below the paving.

Outcome & value

The sphere and ring have become the plaza’s default meeting point: people sit against it, photograph it and use it to describe where they are. The reflection changes through the day and lights keep it active after dark.

Maintenance is a periodic wash and soft-cloth polish, with seating checked on the site schedule. Built in 316 and detailed to shed water, it should hold its mirror through Austin summers without staining.
