Geometric Stainless Steel Animal Sculpture for a Plaza

Retail developer · Dubai, UAE · 304 Stainless

For a commercial plaza that wanted a striking focal point, we produced a geometric stainless steel bull — angular faceted planes assembled into a powerful, forward-leaning silhouette.

Each facet is individually cut and mirror-polished before assembly, so the seams are clean and the reflections carry the surrounding towers. The internal armature and base are engineered to withstand the plaza’s wind exposure, and the whole piece is anchored on a discreet plinth.

The brief

A retail developer in Dubai, UAE, commissioned a focal piece for a commercial plaza where the surrounding units wanted footfall drawn to the centre of the scheme. The brief called for a form with real presence and an obvious silhouette.

It had to sit outdoors in the desert climate without coatings or regular refinishing. The plaza is open to the street with strong summer sun, dust and occasional high wind; the programme ran 16 weeks and the piece was installed in 2023.

Design approach

The subject is a bull, built as a forward-leaning silhouette in angular faceted planes. Faceting was the central decision: the form reads as a solid volume from a distance while the individual planes split the reflections, so it stays legible in bright light where a smooth surface would flare. At 3.5 m L × 2.4 m H it is a strong marker at plaza scale.

Material & engineering

304 stainless steel was selected for a plaza where the exposure is heat, dust and rain rather than salt or chlorinated water. For a dry inland site with hand-cleaning access, 304 gives a stable mirror surface at sensible cost and needs no coating in a climate that degrades painted finishes quickly.

Each facet is cut and polished before assembly, which keeps the seams clean and lets reflections read continuously across the planes. The panels are welded to an internal stainless armature carrying the cantilever of the head and shoulders, engineered for the plaza’s wind exposure.

Fabrication & finish

The armature was built and the facets trial-fitted in the workshop, then each panel polished and assembled with seams dressed to a consistent line. The finished piece was inspected under daylight for facet alignment before dispatch.

Installation

The sculpture shipped in two main assemblies and was craned onto the prepared plinth over a closed night, with the armature anchored to cast-in bolts and the final polish carried out in position. Handover covered a routine wash procedure.

Outcome & value

The piece has become the plaza’s meeting point and the scheme’s most-used image in its letting material. With no applied finish, upkeep is a wash cycle — the practical reason a retail landlord can carry a dusty environment without a refurbishment line.
