Stainless Steel Tiered Fountain for a Commercial Plaza

At the centre of a commercial plaza, this tiered stainless fountain brings the sound and movement of water to a public gathering space. Three mirror-polished bowls cascade water from tier to tier, catching the light through the day and softly glowing at night.
The bowls are machined with level overflow rims so the water sheeting stays even and quiet. A recirculating system with filtration and accessible pump chamber keeps maintenance simple for the city’s team.
The brief
The client is a municipal plaza in Brisbane, Australia, reactivating a central paved square that had become a pass-through. It called for a water feature to give the square a centre and mask traffic noise.
The site is inland and well ventilated, with hard sun and heavy summer downpours, so the feature had to be robust around unsupervised public use and simple enough for a small city team to service. Fourteen weeks were allowed.
Design approach
Three tiered bowls were chosen for the way sound builds through the drop heights: quiet enough at the square’s edge to talk over, present enough at the centre to mark the space.
At 3.6 m H × 2.6 m Ø it occupies the square without walling it off. Two iterations kept the bowls reading as one gesture, with overflow rims levelled to a common line for an even fall.
Material & engineering
304 stainless suits the location. Brisbane is inland with no salt load, so its corrosion resistance is matched comfortably to mains water and urban air, and the saving over 316 went into water handling and safety detailing.
Each bowl is spun and welded with a machined rim, carried on a central column cored through the plaza slab. Rim edges are radiused, basin depth follows the approved safety profile, and the service chamber is person-sized.
Fabrication & finish
Bowls were spun, matched and welded in the workshop, then polished to a mirror inside and out so the water reads as light. Rims were machined after welding to keep them level to a tight tolerance.
Wet-testing ran bowl by bowl and then as a complete assembly, tuning flows until the sheets were even and the sound consistent at the seating edges. The recirculating system was commissioned before dispatch.
Installation
The feature was delivered partly assembled and craned onto the prepared slab, with the column tied into starter bars cast during the paving works. Plumbing was connected in the chamber below and the surrounds made good.
Outcome & value
The square now has a gathering point with a sound that carries without shouting, serviced on a standard seasonal schedule. Water is recirculated and filtered, so consumption is evaporation and top-up only.
Two years in, the mirror cleans up with a wipe and there is no visible corrosion or pump replacement. The fountain has done what a municipal feature should: given an anonymous square a centre.
