Bronze Memorial Figure in a Quiet Park Clearing

Commissioned as a memorial, this bronze figure sits in a quiet park clearing where families gather to remember. The piece is cast in bronze with a deep, even patina — darker in the recesses, warm where the light catches the shoulders.

We chose bronze for its warmth and permanence; it weathers gracefully outdoors and needs only occasional care. The figure is mounted on a low granite base, created to be touched and visited, not just viewed from a distance.

The brief

The client is a community trust in Manchester, UK, commissioning a memorial for a quiet clearing in a public park where families gather to remember.

The brief was a single figure at human scale, made to be approached, touched and sat beside rather than viewed from behind a rope. Eighteen weeks allowed a proper casting, chasing and patina programme.

Design approach

The figure was designed as a calm, upright form that reads from the path and invites people closer. At 1.9 m H it stands near eye height, which makes it approachable rather than monumental.

Shoulders and hands are softly rounded for touch. Two rounds with the trust’s committee adjusted stance and head position so the figure reads as present without being specific to any individual.

Material & engineering

Bronze was chosen for warmth, permanence and its behaviour outdoors. Unlike a polished metal it develops a stable patina that deepens rather than degrades, and it holds surface detail from the original modelling.

The casting is hollow with controlled wall thickness, fixed through cast-in studs into a granite base bedded below grade, sized for wind stability and safe against casual climbing.

Fabrication & finish

The figure was modelled, moulded and cast in sections, then welded and chased so joints disappear into the sculpted surface. Chasing is where a memorial is won or lost and absorbed most of the programme.

The dark patina was built in layers for even tone, with recesses left deep and lit surfaces lifted slightly. A protective wax was applied and the piece inspected under daylight and evening light.

Installation

The bronze was craned onto the prepared base in the clearing and anchored through the cast-in studs, then the base dressed and turf reinstated. Timing avoided the park’s planting season.

A final clean and wax was carried out once works were complete, so the piece was presented in its intended condition for the trust’s dedication.

Outcome & value

The memorial has become the place the community uses for remembrance, the patina darkening and warming as intended. Visitors touch the figure and base, exactly the behaviour the design encouraged.

Maintenance is an annual clean and re-wax, with no electrical or moving parts to fail. For a trust on a small budget, that low running cost matters as much as the sculpture.
